Characteristics of lightning flashes over the Indian region

چکیده
Abstract. Satellite (Lightning Imaging Sensor) based lightning flash grid (0.5 x 0.5) data over the land mass areas of the Indian region covering between 8-30N for a period of 4 years (1998-2001) have been analyzed to examine their geographical, annual, interannual and diurnal distribution. An attempt has been made to obtain IC:CG ratio. Result of this study demonstrates that there exists latitudinal variation of lightning flash density which is also confirmed through the ratio analysis. The annual variation of lightning flash density exhibits typical bimodal variation during its annual course. Time series of this parameter shows a consistent increase in the peak values. The diurnal variation of lightning flash count revealed that there exists a strong diurnal cycle with a prominent peak at 1000 hrs UTC over this region. The values of intra cloud flash (IC) to cloud to ground flash (CG) ratio are found to be more or less equal to the values reported by other investigators for the tropics.

Convective Structure of Hurricanes as Revealed by Lightning Locations
Cloud-to-ground lightning flash locations were examined for nine Atlantic basin hurricanes using data from the National Lightning Detection Network. A common radial distribution in ground flash density was evident: a weak maximum in the eyewall region, a clear minimum 80–100 km outside the eyewall, and a strong maximum in the vicinity of outer rainbands (210–290-km radius). These results are co...

This paper presents the preliminary results from CG lightning characteristics analysis over three large urban areas in southeastern Brazil: the São Paulo metropolitan area, Vale do Paraíba Paulista and the Campinas metropolitan area. A lightning dataset of about 310,000 flashes was obtained by the Brazilian lightning detection network during the months of December, January and February from 199...

Cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash data collected by the lightning detection network installed at the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) have been used to study the urban effect on lightning activity over and around Seoul, the largest metropolitan city of South Korea, for the period of 1989–1999. Negative and positive flash density and the percentage of positive flashes have been calc...
